“Tips & Tricks for Growing Orchids on your Lanai-Porch”

Jet Tanner: Like most of us, I am not a Florida native but transplanted from New York. I have lived in Florida for about 25 years and developed a love for orchids. My interest in orchids started when I purchased some Phalaenopsis from Home Depot. My initial success sparked my interest to learn more. About 8 years ago, I found a “Newbie Florida Orchid Growers” and FOG Facebook groups, which taught me a lot. It also contributed to the orchid addiction, which most of us are familiar with. I have now been an administrator of Newbie group for several years. I have made many friends in the orchid world and love to connect with orchid friends throughout the state. I enjoy being part of a few orchid societies and find that there is always something new to learn.

When living in Vero, I had anywhere from 50 – 100 orchids that were mostly phalenopsis, dendrobiums, oncidiums, and a few cattleyas and vandas. After moving to Ft. Pierce in 2018, I realized how important it was to learn my environment and growing area. The orchids I was growing was in my shady lanai in Vero, were not doing as well at my new house. I fell in love with more sun-loving orchids and my collection is mostly Cattleya species, and hybrids, and all orchids in the Cattleya family including myrmecophilas, brassocattleyas, etc. and especially, fragrant orchids.

I have done very well with mounting orchids – mostly on cork. I sometimes use clay pots but prefer the black plastic net pots because they give good drainage and plenty of airflow around the roots, and they are easy to hang. I use a mixture of potting mediums, a variety of supplies, and am passionate about helping people learn what works for them. Most of my orchid purchases have been seedlings from orchid societies, orchid shows, and ordering online from various vendors. I now have a collection of close to 1,000 orchids that I grow in and around my lanai, as well as around my house. I would love to share my ideas, and have others participate and share what works for them. I will be selling a variety of mounted and potted orchids (all types and sizes), as well as cork for mounting your own.
